Remember that mystery app that appeared in the first cut of one of the iPhone adds? Well, it appears now that it is an Apple-designed YouTube application. Apple just released a PR this morning announcing it.

Of course, the mystery app could still have just been an ad agency mistake, but it does seem there will be another app on the iPhone that we haven't seen yet.

YouTube on the phone is pretty cool. Now you can annoy everyone around you with all those bookmarked videos of cats adopting puppies and sk8r-bois breaking their legs.

This is great news! Makes the iPhone even more worth it.

And there's still space for 4 more icons on the Home screen!

While being able to view Youtube is nice, I kind of question whether it deserves its own button on the home screen. I wonder what Apple is going to do when they start putting out more widgets and so forth. Will the home screen scroll, or will there be nested categories?

Definitely. That would be one of the most used items on the iPhone, right up there with maps. I know when I am out and about, I want to find a local business (google maps) or a movie time. I can look up to find the weather and i tend to let my stocks go for the long term. But a restaurant for dinner and movie schedules, those are time-critical issues.

Lame.

In one commercial Apple claims the web on the iPhone is the real web..not kind of like the web...the real web.

Well...the real web has You Tube. So why should we need a separate application for You Tube videos.

They are contradicting themselves...but whatever...I'm still buying it.

It's an interesting question. Youtube videos that are in h.264 might work within Safari on iPhone. But having a dedicated browser is certainly more convenient.

Don't get taken in by the "real web" talk, though. While it's probably the best mobile browser so far, there's still going to be a lot of stuff that requires plugins that won't work on the iPhone -- at least at first.
