Backed up mp3's from ipod won't play - advice?

So, I backed up my ipod awhile ago on an external HD, which I thought was smart, and now that the ipod is completely broken, the backed up files won't play. What the dilly is happening?
I have verified the files are mp3 and that I have read and write permission. Interestingly, the files won't play in any player (including audion, itunes, etc.) except vlc player.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How did you go about backing up the files?

It was a while ago, but I think I just copied and pasted the files directly from the ipod to the external HD.

Well, you can't do that without using some other kind of software to make the files visible, because the iPod stores them on a hidden data partition. That's why I'm wondering if the way you copied them changed something about the files somehow. How are the files named?

Not sure how I did it, although I'm pretty sure I didn't use any special software. Files are named, for example, /Volumes/WD USB 2/My Music/Beck/01 - The Golden Age.mp3

Were the files in question bought from iTunes, burnt to CD, then re-encoded to mp3?
