Does anyone know if there is a google maps server up yet or one similar that will serve iphone content?

Is there even a special server for the google maps content on the iPhone ?? Isn't it just the app on the iPhone repackaging "normal" google maps content with its own special graphical effects?? (e.g. isn't it just the iPhone app turning the normal "star" markers on google maps into the nifty dropping pins?)

Apple is giving the impression that you can view normal web pages no problem, but with these web 2.0 apps that are popping up, a lot of these are repackaging/reformatting of regular size sites. Also developers will want to rework sites that have flash content etc.
I was wondering if anyone has seen a repackaging of google maps, which I suspect will be done on the server side - not directly on the iphone.

I can't find the link but Steve Jobs was telling someone (I think it was at D) that they contacted Google and told them their ideas and got to work on the application for Google Maps. They said that it is an actual application running on the iPhone that just pulls the data from Google.

That was at the "D" conference. You can watch the clips on YouTube.
They just built their own front-end for the standard data from the Google Maps database. The iPhone's front-end client just happens to blow away pretty much every other implementation ever written.
But then, what else is new?
