I watched the 20 minute video and recall seeing at least 3 different ways to zoom in and out depending on what you are doing. For example, zooming in on a photo requires the two finger expanding slide motion and zooming out a single tap. However, zooming in and out on a google map requires a completely different action. Finally, zooming in and out on other webpages requires a one finger tap to zoom in and two finger tap to zoom out (IIRC). WTF? That is about as un-apple as it gets!

Also, does anyone know if you will be able to search for contacts by typing the person's name? I have over 1,300 contacts on my Treo, and can find practically anyone by typing 3 or less characters (first letter of first name and the first 2 letters of the last name). It seems that having to use that slider on the right and search all the "D's" (for example) will be very cumbersome.

Actually, I think the controls are pretty standard -- they're just highlighting different ones at different times. For example, I know you can do the "pinch" commands on photos, google maps, and web pages. It's just that for web pages, they also have an optimization (the details of which I'm not sure of) that will fill up the screen with what you tap.

Actually I read somewhere you CANT type letters to jump to a contact, you need to "flick" through the list, or scroll through the alphabet on the right side....sorry...

We as users have become used to typing in contacts' names to find them simply because scrolling through them has always been slow and cumbersome on any given portable device (except for the iPod). Something which the iPhone excels at.

And since by Apple's own admission the keyboard is inaccurate (hence the need for intelligent correction), typing in and searching for contacts woul probably be even more annoying than simply selecting the letter on the side and then scrolling down the list.

But just because we haven't seen the functionality, it doesn't mean it's not there. In all of the demo videos, we haven't yet seen anyone attempt to type in a contact into the To: field in Mail, so it's quite possible it can type ahead just like in OSX's mail.

I agree completely. I guess you get used to it, but... What's the deal with only pinching to zoom IN, and only on a photo? What's the logic behind not zooming in and out using a pinch for everything? That's how most multi-touch stuff I've seen works, and it seems to most intuitive.
