The video demo is sweet. I have a Treo right now but am seriously considering the iPhone. One thing I haven't seen addressed is whether and how the iPhone handles multiple email accounts. If you can configure more than 1 account, is there just 1 inbox for all accounts, or separate screens for separate accounts? How about custom folders, mail rules, etc.?

That's a good question, and we don't know the answer to it, I'm afraid. I would assume that multiple email accounts are possible (I would be very surprised if they weren't). But I'm not sure how they are organized.

I'm guessing that it should. I'm hoping it has LDAP support too.

It does. They've mentioned it before. Not exactly the same, but watch the video of the email in action. On the Inbox screen the top left button is a back button that says Mailboxes. I'm assuming that is all of your mailboxes displayed just like they are in the left pane of Mail on OSX, including mailboxes for different accts.

I saw that, but "mailboxes" could simply be referring to IMAP folders and the like, and might not be multiple accounts. (I believe it probably does include multiple accounts, but that's not conclusive proof.) I haven't heard anyone mention it specifically, and I'd be interested to see if you could track down a mention.

I think it was in the MW keynote, but I could be wrong.

Apple - iPhone - Get Ready
iTunes will make email setup on iPhone a breeze by automatically syncing the settings from email accounts stored in Mail on a Mac or Outlook on a PC. Don’t worry if you’re not on one of these email services; iPhone also works with almost any industry-standard POP3 and IMAP email system.

Hmm ... I hope so. What's odd is in the videos I've never once seen someone have to choose which mailbox to send from. But then again, maybe they just used one e-mail account on the demos in order to streamline things.

Looking at the new iPhone Tutorial video in the settings section you see an Add Account option. So this would imply it supports more than one account.

If that weren't there, it might have been a deal-breaker. Love the integration with my Mac that this phone will provide.

And proof that it has flight mode ! Or was that a known fact already?

In the demo video he explains Airplane Mode. I think before then it was sort of assumed.

Airplane mode is sweet, it's so frusturating when they say "turn off all electronic devices" and they come around and make me shut off my iPod, which is broadcasting absolutely no signal. Now I can show her the little airplane icon and she'll go away.

Uh, you still have to turn it off for the "all electronic devices" requirement. Airplane mode is so you can turn it on at all, since both the FAA and FCC do not allow cellphones to be turned on anytime during flight.

That should just be during takeoff and landing, though.

Well I may be showing my ignorance, but what on earth could an iPod do to disrupt the plane, even during take of or landing? Or is just a catch-all so that no electronic devices can accidentally be turned on that will interfere with the equipment?
If this thing has airplane mode, presumably it'd be fine during the entire plane ride, because it would be self-contained and not emitting any signals.

They're basically just playing it extremely safe, because it is theoretically possible for electronic devices to interfere with instruments -- even something like a game boy or CD player.

Yeah, I can pretty much see flight attendants laughing at that little airplane icon just before they demand that you turn it off.

Actually, I see super hot flight attendants catching a glimpse of my iPhone, then promptly saying "Excuse me sir, but is that an iPhone?" I say "Of course, what else would it be?" To which she slyly replies "Well, I'm going to have to ask you to turn that thing off, then follow me to the back and turn it back on." <cue pr0n music>
I can't wait.
