is the bluetooth in the iphone only good for an headset? i haven't found any concrete evidence that it's gonna support stereo bluetooth . . and also now I can't find anything if it'll be able to sync via bluetooh? . .. . .seriously . . is it me or is it not getting as revolutionary as I thought it should!?!?!?!

I don't think they ever said it would sync through bluetooth. If it does, that would be an excellent feature, but how realistic is it for it to transfer music/videos/photos/etc. all through bluetooth? I could understand contacts and calendar, but I'd honestly just rather plug the thing in, cause it would need to charge sometime anyways.

Syncing is done via USB. No wireless with the first version iPhone.
This omission hardly detracts from the revolutionary aspects of the iPhone, first and foremost of which I believe is the software.

Yes, since syncing of contacts and other information is done at the same time as music and videos, I don't think you could possibly have Bluetooth syncing. I had a Sony Clie (Palm PDA) that could sync via Bluetooth, but it took quite a long time just for normal PIM data. Even Bluetooth 2.0 isn't nearly fast enough.

What would make the most sense would be to allow syncing over the Internet (perhaps only to .Mac subscribers). Bluetooth syncing really isn't really much of a convenience, but having contacts, calendar, and so forth updated automatically as you make changes on the phone would be very nice.

It would make sense to allow syncing email/contacts/calendar/etc via BlueTooth, like most other phones can, but I doubt the iPhone will. Whip out that USB cable every time you want to sync.

My comment above was a response to mduell's post, but for some reason the forums have put it first.

Do any of the cellular providers in the US allow syncing contacts/calendar/etc over the internet for free? A few have pay services, and some (*cough*verizon) even go so far as to disable BlueTooth object exchange to 'encourage' people to pay for it. I guess with .Mac it's kind of paid for, but the carrier doesn't see any of the money.
And for all the people who want an iPhone without data (I've been surprised how many just want to use it as a phone and media player), internet sync wouldn't work.

I'm not sure what the carrier has to do with it in the case of the iPhone. It's a bit of an anomaly compared to many other phones that nickel and dime you for features, and it's very likely that all iPhones will have to have unlimited internet access.

AT&T doesn't 'nickel and dime' you for features, they demand Jacksons for basic features that other carriers throw in for free (like tethering).
But unlike Verizon, I don't think they cripple the software on the phones (too) much.

So basically, the iSync team is busy enabling Bluetooth synching of contacts and calendar items for just about every other modern phone *except* Apple's own model.
That's just brilliant.
Here's hoping Apple sees the ridiculousness of that scenario, and allows iSync to sync lightweight data via Bluetooth.

What? No Bluetooth syncing. I find this bizarre. I have synced my phones to iSync via Bluetooth for (guessing) five years or something.

Again, we don't know for sure that it can't do it, although I have a feeling that Apple is going to try and keep things simple, and having various ways to sync, each syncing different content is not particularly simple.
The only time I see Bluetooth syncing to be an advantage is if you have a laptop and you want to sync with your iPhone without bringing a cable along. Not being able to do it is a minor inconvenience at best.

iPhone has a lot of potential. Bluetooth stack is weak. Hopefully some smart folks are working on adding other services. Ok so I have heard many say that Bluetooth is not a good medium and will not replace the USB cable. Agreed, But I think it will be fine to sync contacts and small PIM data. I have tethered the iPhone via a point to point Wifi connection. Although Edge is a slow gateway I believe that Wifi does have plenty of local bandwidth to perform all sync operations. Hopefully as more native apps come out Wifi will be more leveraged. I say “boo”. I know battery life is a big factor. But, come on guys it’s suppose to be a music player as well. Not including A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth Audio) was stupid. All in all still very pleased wilth my device. The unoffical apps have a lot to do with me being happy.
Just my 2cents,

1 the battery life is no joke.
when I 1st experienced it I thought I MUST have for got to plub in the phone the nightbefore or maybe there was a power outage......
2.I don't see how people use the phone without the 3rd party apps.
I dont find bluetooth sound quility up to par with wired quality so hearing hit or miss quality in both ears is not something im interestesd in.
in addition to this its just one more thing to charge....
ill give that technology a few more years
