I called AT&T this morning. I'm currently a T-Mobile customer. My main question is how much is International Data going to be on the iPhone. They said they know but cannot say until 6:00 PM. I don't see why that's suck a big deal. We already know the regular rate plans. Why would this add-on be a secret?
To compare I asked about BlackBerry Internation Data. I travel outside the country a lot and rely on my BlackBerry for email to stay in touch back home. T-Mobile is great they have an unlimited international email package that I can add when I leave the country and remove when I return. It's $20. I asked AT&T what they had that compared. They only have a $69.99 plan for international and it requires a 1 year contact just for this add on. Voice is not included. What's up with the price difference? That's a $50 difference. Doesn't that seem odd?
Anyway, I ended up speaking with 4 people to get to the person who told me they cannot reveal the Internation Roaming package until 6:00 PM for the iPhone, but it said it would be good. -Whatever that means.
Then this same guy tells me that I am not going to like the iPhone if I've used a BlackBerry. He said the Pearl is much better and has better features. He told me that sure the iPhone is revolutionary, but the BlackBerry Pearl is the Mercedes of phones. (Sorry, but I'm looking for something even nicer!) He went on to say the BlackBerry handles email better than the iPhone and that I should upgrade to the Pearl.
This went on for a few minutes. (Has Apple called AT&T customer service and played the part of the dumb customer to see what these people are saying?) I told the guy I was a huge Apple fan, but more importantly a huge fan of quality and design, and that I was on my way to line up for the iPhone. He said I would probably really like the iPhone since I'm a 'techy'. He held one in training, and though it was 'dainty' and could easily break, but seemed like a 'cool device'.
He wished me luck and that was it.
So, three questions. I don't expect anyone to answer these are just questions I have.
What are the international data rates?
Why is AT&T so much more expensive for BlackBerry service?
Why is AT&T trying to talk me out of the iPhone on launch day? And me being a switcher from T-Mobile too!

I am exactly in the same boat as you. I have a white pearl on T-Mobile, and I absolutely love the phone. It does everything I need (I travel a lot) and keeps me connected. You cannot beat T-Mobile's 19.95 unlimited blackberry plan.
Having said that, I do want an iPhone, I really do. I know it will do some things better than my blackberry, and I think it probably won't do some things well. I just want one. $59/mon for voice and unlimited data isn't bad.

I think the domestic data plan is great. It actually comes out to less that what I'm paying now.
But, international is my concern.
AT&T's BlackBerry rates are ridiculous compared to T-Mobile.

Well, generally, it's cheaper to roam in Europe than in Asia. >.<

That's AT&T for you. T-mobile's $20/mo unlimited blackberry data plan allows you to tether; AT&T charges $80/mo for unlimited blackberry data with tethering.
