I started using mine between 2 - 4PM and was in the battery's red zone around midnight. I used every function during this time.

I used mine on and off all day yesterday mostly surfing the web and emailing. The battery last until a bout midnight.

Fully charged the phone overnight Friday. Haven't been using it hardcore yet, but off and on calling, email, SMS, web, other stuff all day yesterday. Still have over 3/4 charge today. I figure with my "normal" daily use, I should be charging every 2 days or so.

I got about 8 hours of intensive use out of it, but this leads me to wish they really took the time to make a replaceable battery as I don't always have the time to get to a full charging and if we had a spare battery already charged to insert, it would make for extended use between getting to a charger.

Oh well..

Yep. It seems our fears are justified. The iPhone's battery life is going to be a signficant issue for a lot of people.

As a phone alone it seems OK judging by the posts out there, but as a phone + iPod + PDA it's a serious problem without user-replaceable batteries.

Well, I started around 9am and only had a little battery left by around 6pm, but I was using it a lot. On a work day, I'll have it take naps in the dock while I'm at my desk. Weekends, the iPhone will have to use the car charger for it's naps

I got the "20%" warning after about 6 hours of near-continuous hard-core use. Video, email, web-surfing, and ipod. Minimal phone use.

Mostly EDGE internet browsing.

Anyone know if this battery needs to be deep discharged every so often? Moreover, do we want to let it charge down before recharge, or can we just plug it in every night whether it needs it or not.

All the battery maintenance links for the iPhone point to the iPod. So follow those instructions for battery maintenance which I recall is full discharge and recharge once per month if I remember correctly.

Of note, the phone will charge with an older Firewire iPod cable, but won't sync.

I carried mine around all day yesterday doing my normal routine: email, txting, 7-8 10 minute calls, browsed the internet for probably about an hour and demoed YouTube and stuff to friends. I still had lots of charge last night so I just turned it off and went to bed. I'm going to see if I can get through a workday with what charge remains. I listen to music all day and take a few calls, but not so much web browsing.

Anybody having battery trouble? Battery draining down faster than expected? I'm reading the post and most people are experiencing really good battery life. My battery drain to half and I really didn't use it like all the other people. Hmmmmm.... Just thinking did I get a bad battery in my iPhone?

CIA - You sure it charges? I get the "battery charging" icon, but it seems to drain my battery rather than actually charging it. I have a friend who says he left it plugged in all night w firewire cable, and he had no battery charge at all in the am.

All of Apple's products use Lithium batteries, and they are not supposed to ever be fully discharged. I recommend running the battery down to a low level every once in a while to keep the software in synchronization with the battery's true level, but never discharge it fully. Lithium batteries that get fully discharged usually short out.

I think it's likely that Apple's software takes the characteristics of lithium ion batteries into account. So even if you drain it to "0" you're not actually draining the battery fully.

My battery life has been very good, by the way. I have absolutely no qualms about using the internet, making phone calls, or using the iPod as much as I want in a day.

Regards to firewire charging, I charged my iPhone using the firewire cable and it worked fine. This is both plugged into my iBook, and also using the firewire wall power adaptor brick thing that used to ship with 3g and older iPods. Over 2 nights I charged it from low to full charge with no issues. My USB charger that came with it is at work (my "home" machine for the iPhone is my work computer, sad). So I dunno why your friend had issues. I can charge the new Nano's over firewire also (again, no sync). I think the power pins on the dock connector are the same regardless of it being the firewire or USB cable.

I had a phone for 6 days and it did half of what my friends phones were doing (three other phones)
I remember the first change got really hot after 4 hours, then I had to remove the phone, let it cool for 15 min, and it still took another 4 hours to charge all the way. When realizing it was nothing like the performance of others I retuned the phone to the apple store for another, Since then, now going on 4 days, It has been much better with the new phone.

Also I was told from a person at apple that the phone has a second ground and he suggested I did not use the other cables or car chargers from my old ipod. So I would rather play it safe and bought another cable for work to charge from my macbook and a car changer that had the "works with iphone" stamp on it.

iPhone Manual: Cable information is at the end.

Current usage log after 4 changes on the new phone, still have not reached the 20% warning.
I just made a note every-time I used the phone.
