Just thought I would share some of my own findings after getting an I phone for my wife.
1) Easy purchase for my wife she walked into the Apple store today and out in 5 minutes with an 8g iPhone.
2) Setup was supper easy wife plugged it into her portable, itunes popped up she followed the directions and everything worked as described and outlined.
3) Simple easy sync of all wifes calender, e-mail, ..... from computer to iphone everything she had in her treo and more is now on her iphone.
4) Wi-Fi configuration again very simple but I had to step in and take care of this for my wife.
5) Well since I have my hands on the phone time for me to play

6) First test was to see if I could use the browser to interact with a web based EMR system I have developed for a customer this is a Windows 2003 server running IIS and requires basic authentication. Any mac works fine with this server even when running the current beta Safari version. Tried connecting from iPhone no luck. Enter the url phone prompts for user name and password then just says loading with a partial blue bar across the URL and never returns. Jumped over to another computer to do some tcpdumps and the iPhone is stuck making repeated DNS requests to my DNS server.... Leave this one for now maybe dig in deeper another day.
7) Second test jump to a web site with an applet to see if the iPhone browser has java support again no luck this one is also very disappointing. I really was hoping for java support on the web browser since the Safari browser supports it.
8) Now turn the phone over to my oldest daughter her first test is bring up the web browser jump to youtube and try to watch one of her favorite Anemia again no luck iphone web browser complains about no flash player plug-in no worries right they have a special youtube app switch to that and try again.... but through the youtube app you can't list any of the anemia video's she is after yet they are all available from the actual web site. So I try some video searches and sure enough the video's available from iphone youtube app is a much smaller subset of what is available from youtube web site.... ???
9) So now we head to a family event great youngest daughter now tests the photo functions. Not bad not great but still good enough to capture the event.
10) Get back from event Sync phone to computer again easy as can be...
11) Now play with the other apps clock, weather, map, stock.... all very nice but in playing with them I also used the web browser to look over apples online manual for the phone. This is a 143 page pdf document. First time i pulled it up and started scrolling through it (sure would be nice to have a faster way to jump to a page than scroll in this situation) about the 50th page or so something happened and I was back at the home screen. Went back in got to where I wanted to be with out problems but latter again got dumped back to home screen and had to again go back and start over. Clearly preview(?) has a few bugs some place. Experienced similar things with the map feature where when I use it to set up a start and end destination then show the route and have the application walk me through tracing the path route step by step again at times the app exits and I get dumped back in the home screen.
Well that is all for the first days playing and even though it has some big short comings for me and what I had hoped I could do with it, it is still a huge improvement for my wife over her old treo.
Really was hoping for items 6 to work easy and by all accounts that should be a non issue for any standard web browser but clearly something is different with the iPhone.
Well just thought I would share some of the more interesting things I found while using the iPhone. Still a very fun and slick phone look forward to updates that fix the bugs that I have seen and addresses the other limitations expressed above.
