Hey everyone, is the dock required for charging and syncing? On the Apple support site, it says that I should be able to both charge (via AC adapter) and sync the iPhone with just the USB cable. When I do this, my powerbook won't recognize the phone. When charging with the cable straight to the phone and wall outlet, I don't see any indication that it's charging. Both processes are normal when the dock is used. Something wrong or is this normal?

My iPhone behaves the same whether I use the dock or just the cable. For those of us that use cases of one type or another, the dock is no longer an option.

Yes, it should work with the cable or the dock. Maybe you can ask Apple for a replacement cable.

My daughter's power supply for the iPhone died. When I switched over to my power supply, the iPhone lite up and showed the green horizontal cylinder that indicates charging. Same things when I connected it direct to the iPhone instead of the dock...and also same when plugged into USB on laptop. Sounds like something funky to me.
