I'll try and make this post as short and sweet as possible. I've been a Cingular/AT&T customer for around 8 years but around '2000/'01 all of the Cingular customers here in Myrtle Beach were put under a local Telco's umbrella instead of being under the national CIngular umbrella. We weren't given a choice about this, it just happened. Up until now, I haven't really cared. All of their local offices have the AT&T branding and carry MOST of the phones. I have a family plan that looks identical to the one on the AT&T webpage. Here's the kicker. I can't get an iphone right now while under this affiliate company. They're response is that they don't that data plan yet but hope to in about 6 months. Unbelievable. So I asked to be put back under AT&T directly so that I could get whatever phone I wanted. I was initially told by 2 different employees that in order to do this I would have to pay early termination fees just like someone porting over from another cell company. I was like, "WTF"? I'm on ATT, right? Yes but... Anyway, they now have agreed to port me over without fees but after two weeks and no one at ATT still knowing I exist I'm beginning to wonder. Supposedly it's supposed to port over automatically and keep all of my existing contracts intact. Hmmmm... we'll see. What's worse is every time I call ATT I get a different answer and solution about what to do next. Probably the most common answer is to just go open a new account when I get the iphone (it's on order from apple) and then immediately call ATT and have my family plan and current primary number moved onto the iphone at which point the new account I just opened will just go away. As you might expect, I'm very hesitant to open a new account with a new number while I still have another account just floating out in the wild. OK, enough of this novel. Does ANYONE have experience's like this to draw from? Are there any ATT employees lurking around here with any knowledge. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

I don't have any experience with this, but the first thing I would try if you do get an iPhone is the standard "switch this iPhone with an existing phone on my AT&T account" option (or whatever it's called). If that doesn't work for some reason, call AT&T and have the person walk you through the process on the phone. That way you definitely won't get stuck with two accounts or something, since even if they screw it up, you'll have it on record that they told you to do it.
