Belkin : Headphone Adapter for iPhone

I was in search for an adapter that would allow me to play my iphone through the tape deck of my car (something I've been doing daily with an iPod for several years). I came across this little adapter and decided to try it out.

This thing is HUGE. It's really long...I was thinking it would be a little thing, but it's over half the size of the iPhone itself...the most awkward looking adapter that could have been made for the iPhone. When it's plugged in, the adapter definitely is the focal point when you look at the iphone. It's really ugly.

Has anyone else found any solutions to use your iPhone through the tape deck of a car? This belkin adapter is certainly a temporary solution until something better comes out...a tape that actually has the correct input jack or a shorter adapter (if that's possible).

On another note, I've gotta say I'm not too impressed with the friendliness of the iPhones ipod player. For the past several years, I've always held my ipod in hand while driving, and quickly adjusting volume or tracking through songs was a snap. It's not really the case with the iphone. For one, the iPhone goes to sleep after a few minutes so if I want to change songs or adjust volume, I've gotta slide the gadget back on and two, the controls are so small on iphone, I've gotta look down at it and press in the correct spots to control the ipod. Nitpicky? I don't think so. Something that was great with the original ipods was its simplicity and gigantic controls, allowing me to continue doing what I was doing without having to concentrate on iPhone itself.

One more thing I will say about the iPhone is that it's not *nearly* as easy to scroll through movies or songs with the touch screen vs the ipod video (which is known for its genius scroll-wheel).

However, with all that said, I still love the iphone.

i totally agree . . . design wise . . retarded, but I think they made it so long to justify the 19.95 price . . . otherwise, i wouldn't pay more than 4.95 for this

I would have paid EXTRA if they made it shorter!

Why not use an adapter that takes advantage of the line-out capabilities? Volume won't be a concern; you can easily control it with the stereo controls. I use the DLO TransPod (now TransDock) to charge my iPod/iPhone and listen to it through my stereo's AUX port. That may be overkill for you, but something like the SendStation PocketDock could work.

(With the iPhone, you'll have to go into Airplane mode. I'm not sure if that's true if you aren't charging it.)

When you're in iPod mode, the physical volume buttons on the side will change the volume (even while asleep).

Quoted for emphasis.

I've read a lot of things about people complaining about having to do like 30 things to change the volume, when all you have to do is press the buttons on the side.

Not the radio of course, but the controller ...
