Well my iPod is dying, I'm only getting sound out of one side. I swapped ear-buds, tested them on my laptop and confirmed that its the jack that's not working any longer and not the ear-buds.
With that said, any rumors about when the next revision of ipods is due. I'm guessing September but if someone can affirm that's a good estimate or perhaps october, I'd appreciate it.
While I truly am in awe of the iphone, I am locked into a 2 year commitment with verizon, and to be honest I'm pretty pleased with the reception and service so I don't want to pay that high cancellation fee so that means I'm stuck waiting for a new ipod or just bite the bullet now.

You could just replace the jack on it.
You could also try popping the contacts out more using a pin as they've probably gotten flatter over time and so don't make proper contact any more.

The estimates on when a new iPod will surface are all over the map. Some say before the holidays, some say after. Some say the first round will be new Nanos, some say full blown iPods. Its pretty hard to make educated guesses based on past release cycles. The iPhone launch threw a wrench into all that, as far as the iPods go. So basically, no one knows but Apple.
I would go see if you could get yours repaired for a nominal fee. I'm not sure if thats possible, but its worth a shot. Otherwise, if it were me and I couldn't get an iPhone, I'd get myself a cheap Nano to hold me over until the new iPods are released. No way would I buy a brand new iPod right now.

Well, as mentioned, it's only a partial solution. I figured it's better than sending you links to bereavement poems, something like Dylan Thomas' "Rage, rage against the dying of the iPod."
What it means is that if the dying iPod is one of the large capacity ones, then you can keep using it in a "fixed-abode" manner, hooked to a stereo at home or at work, which allows you to get a Nano for the train (where you keep only your most popular music, or your audiobooks.)

Seconded...
I'd just drop $150 on a nano, and if necessary switch out the music more often then you do now. Then, in a few months when the new iPods are released, you will probably be able to get around $100ish from ebay on the nano, and then buy a new iPod.
Now is definetely not the time to be buying a brand new video iPod...

Its a mini so capacity is limited, I was planning on replacing it this year anyways but then it head to go and break. It only needed to hang on for a few more months. Oh well. I need to figure out what would be the best course of action.
I could probably wait another month, but that's pushing it which is why I asked my original question. I could break my verizon contract but that will cost me and as I said I'm pretty pleased with service and reception or I could bite the bullet which is what I'm leaning towards.

The bit about the Verizon contract: does that mean your leaning towards the iPhone? That's a bit of a different beast, from a question about a new iPod?
Anyway, Apple has called for a new media event next Tuesday, but it's supposed to be Mac-centered. Everybody's wondering whether the demise of the mini will be announced but nobody really knows diddly-squat.

No, don't get me wrong I'd like one but its not in the cards, too much money to get one (especially when you factor in the fee to break the contract).

I can hold out for another 4 to 6 weeks, though the commute into work is a mite boring without listening to music.

I don't see a reason to buy one now. If come Tuesday, after the announcement no new iPod is announced, then see...
I think the idea of trying to pop out the connectors isn't too bad. Or at least get a quote from BestBuy or Apple for the fix. Maybe it isn't expensive?
