Wow, this may be the most poorly designed study ever. Or they are working for Palm and RIM.
They compare texting on iPhones to texting on QWERTY and numeric keypads. The problem is, they take users who have been with their QWERTY smartphones for months or years, sending text messages at a rate of at least 15/week and then start measuring their iPhone typing prowess immediately. The best part is when they say, "While there was improvement over time, the difference persisted even after using the iPhone for 30 minutes."
How does this garbage get published? I'm all for testing the user experience of the iPhone to other interfaces, but how about a fair test using completely naive users or people who have been trained for an equal amount of time or who have reached an asymptote on the learning curve. Ridiculous.
And, of course, this story is now being repeated around the web. Ahh...tech journalism just keeps getting better. I think the people who were financial gurus running up to the dotcom bust are now tech journalists.
