iPhone unlocked: AT&T loses iPhone exclusivity, August 24, 2007, 12:00PM EDT - Engadget

They haven't released the software yet, but I'm sure it will be soon.

You're correct - FOX News posted a story on it a short time ago. Apparently, though, this mod isn't for the faint of heart, as it requires soldering internal components and hacking software - something most cell phone users aren't prepared to do, especially on a $500 device.

But - since the details have been posted publicly, it's a 100% sure bet that iPhone update 1.0.3 will disable this little hack. You can take that one to the bank. Not to mention - I'm sure that implementing this completely and utterly voids any type of warranty. And where do you plan to get support in the event of a problem?

Attempts like this will hurt the iPhone more than help it in the long run. Just let it be, people, and use it on the network it's designed for. Don't worry, when the contract with AT&T is up, the iPhone will be sold as a standard GSM unlocked device, for any carrier that can support it.

You need to check your facts. The hack is purely software-based.

That's not much of an option for those of us that live in locations that will probably never get the iPhone. As a matter of fact, I finally saw my first iPhone in person at an internet cafe here in St. Maarten. Turns out the phone won't even work here even though AT&T claims it supposed to.

There are actually two stories--one from engadget, and another about a kid in New Jersey who did it through a combination of hardware and software.

New Jersey teen unlocks iPhone - Wireless World - MSNBC.com

I wonder what his reaction was when he heard about the 10-minute, software-only unlocking.

The one done by the teen involves hardware hacking, according to his blog.

I based my comment on the article linked to in the original post.

I for one will be taking advantage of any iPhone hacks... I'm too impatient to wait to see if the phone ever makes it to the Caribbean.

Well, that didn't take long: MacNN | iPhone unlock firm threatened by AT&T

We'll see how that pans out.

If the company is not in the US, AT&T don't stand a chance at stopping them.

Personally, I think iphoneunlocking.com is full of bull. They were the first ones out of the gate promising users who signed up and provided them with IMEI numbers would have their phones unlocked. And they even had some bogus counter saying they had unlocked over 5000 iPhones already. That was obviously a lie, since none of those supposed unlocked phones have ever been demonstrated or shown to the media.

And now, just as iPhoneSIMfree demonstrates their unlocking solution to engadget, these guys show up again, promising just as they did before to unlock the phone if you just provide them with your info, and lo and behold, they're "delayed" again.

My take is that they wanted to ride the whole wave that iPhone unlocking was creating in the media in order to give another go at scraping email addresses from a gullible set of demographics. That email list is probably worth more than any revenue they would generate from unlocking the phone.

Oh, sorry - yeah.

For some reason, I thought AT&T was smacking the iPhoneSIMfree guys.

Why aren't they? Or have they hit iPhoneSIMfree, but that outfit is just legitimate enough not to bother hitting the press until they've clarified the situation?

I think this is a good thing, but won't make much of an overall impact.

Normal people don't like hacking their purchases.

right
I doubt many people would risk making a $600 brick

I will also take advantage(depending on how much the hack costs) of the hack.

I think At&T will be the ones to suffer the most
even though apple is getting a cut of all the service prices
the potential money they will get from people buying iphones to use on other carriers will far surpass it IMO

I predict Apple releases an update that adds some killer features/apps. And along with that update, they implement a way to identify an unlocked phone, and lock that phone out of any patches. No updates means no bug fixes, no additional apps or features, no extra fun.

I don't see how else Apple and AT&T can battle this. That is of course if they even want to battle this. I'm sure AT&T does, but Apple is also losing money on this.

I realize that the company that's produced this through hard work wants to protect their efforts, but I'm a little cautious. As much as they're freeing us the grip of AT&T, It seems as though a user is essentially going to be attached to these guys instead. Anyone else feel the same way?

It's going to be licensed, no doubt, what they decide they don't like you... revoke your license, and you're screwed??
