My Palm Treo is great because it's the unlocked Palm version, but it's slow, clunky and my fingers aren't small enough to pick out tiny interface items.

I already have the old EDGE $19.99/mo. MediaWorks plan from AT&T (née AT&T Wireless, née Cingular).

What are the steps here? Do I have to cancel my old plan? I share the family plan with the wife as well... arrghhh....

Thanks.

Just drop by your local AT&T store (not Apple store) and tell them you want to upgrade to an iPhone.

What they'll tell you is that you need to drop your old data plan (no early termination fee on data plans) and upgrade to an iPhone plan.

All plans include unlimited data and go anywhere from $20-$40 for 200-unlimited text messages respectively.

You can always add on more text messages to the limited plans if it seems cheaper in your situation. You are required to buy an iPhone data plan no matter what.

You can keep your current family plan just the way it is.

When I got my iPhone I came from Treo as well. Only difference was that I had the $49.99 data plan. As macdude said, just go and tell them you want to upgrade to the iPhone. It's a piece of cake. My bill is actually CHEAPER now with the iPhone.

So, one last question:

How's syncing with a Mac at home and Outlook (just tasks and calendar) work out with it?

I've had dupe problems (esp. with Docs to go) and Missing Sync.... any issues here?

Thanks!

Wait, what if I have the unlocked Palm version (bought from Palm)-- will that be an issue too?

Thx.

Here's my recommendation:

1) Buy hammer.
2) Destroy Treo.

It's what I did, and I've never derived so much satisfaction.

Can't help you out there. I synch to Address Book and iCal.

Nope. They don't care what phone you are coming from. All the answers in this thread are applicable to someone coming from any phone to an iPhone.

I there a simple way to get all my Palm contacts into Address Book and my Palm datebook entries into iCal?

I never used iCal and Address Book because having the stuff on my Treo was good enough. But if I go and get an iPhone now I guess I will have to start to use Address Book and iCal. That's OK with me, but I'm not at all fond of transferring the data by hand.

I think you might end up using MissingSync to get Palm --> Apple setup. Money, but you'll get support and probably detailed directions on how to do it from them.

So the verdict on Work PC + home Mac + iPhone is...?

I'm also coming from the Treo, and the best part is not needing anything like Missing Sync, etc. Finally a phone that just works with my Mac, with iCal and Address Book and iPhoto and iTunes . . . Beyond the hardware improvement of moving to the iPhone, compatibility with my Mac is wonderful.

As for moving data from the Treo into iCal and Address Book, you do need something like Missing Sync to make that work. There might be another solution out there somewhere, but I don't know what it is. Are you using palm Desktop now? If so, you might be able to export that data into the Mac programs. Check Apple's web site for information.

Yeah, I am. I was hoping there would be some little app that could extract the data from the latest Palm syncing/backup and somehow shove that into iCal and Address Book. Others must have already wanted to do exactly the same thing, right?

If you're using Palm Desktop, I think you should be able to export most of your data and import it into iCal and Address Book.

And you can: How to import iCal calendars from Palm Desktop 4 and AddressBook 4.0 Help: Importing contacts into Address Book

Anyway, so they'll do the whole account configuration thing at the store... I then don't have to activate it via iTunes?

Or is it they 'transfer' my phone number to the new SIM... or?

Thanks.

I dunno cuz I came from Verizon, and when i did, I did the number transfer online with the activation. Are they doing activations in store, or do you still have to go home and do it?

Let us know.

You have to activate the iPhone via iTunes. Very easy and no waiting around in the store.

Yeah, sorry, the question wasn't that clear. iomatic was asking about SIM swapping at AT&T, and I was wondering if they do swap SIMs and then do the activation, or what. I would think that they'd give you a new SIM and send you on your way.

Right, or can I just use my Cingular SIM from my Palm and buy the cheapie iPhone from the Apple Store, thereby avoiding an AT&T store altogether? Or do they have to set something up?

SO yeah, you need a new SIM as an existing Treo user, or?

I guess you aren't going to get an answer. Time to call AT&T.

iomatic,

The iphone ships with a blank SIM already installed. When you activate via iTunes, AT&T sends your existing SIM information to the new SIM.

I never tried to take the new iPhone SIM and put it back in the Treo to see if it works, but I don't see why not.

Hope that helps.

From what I gathered in the early days of the iPhone, you can pull the iPhone SIM out and put it back into the Treo, but the iPhone SIM is linked to the iPhone, no other SIM can be used (unless you unlock it)

What was I asking? I don't remember anymore

Let's see. Can I just buy an iPhone from the Apple Store and activate it without an AT&T store, with my current Treo in use?

Doubtful, my guess, as I'd have to probably transfer the number.

No, you don't have to transfer the number. They'll see it as a new phone until you do, though. I had a new number for two weeks after I got my phone because I was waiting until the end of my Verizon contract. All AT&T knew is that I had an iPhone with the old number.

You can have more than one phone per provider.

So as said before, I should just heed the earlier advice and go into the AT&T store and get the 8GB and get it activated/changed over, etc.?

No 4GB for me, is the bottom line?

Actually I should've asked some friends earlier (I didn't know they already had CIngular). Apparently you can just enter your existing number when activating. OKTHXBY
