I just stumbled across EQO (pronounced "echo"). It's like Skype only for mobile phones. This could be an awesome app for the iPhone... that is if Apple officially supported third-party software.

There are several existing skype-for-iphone web-based apps out there.

They're IM-only. I think the OP means Skype voice services. I can promise you of all the native apps in all the world that Apple might leave alone, they will do anything and everything to break a voice Skype native app with an update fifteen minutes after each new version of it is released. Even if you're on WiFi, you have to use your mobile carrier to make a phone call. You opt to e-mail instead of call, of course, but if you want to call you have to use minutes. And there's lots of money in those minutes. Free phone service on the iPhone via WiFi is not something Apple will let stand.

This could potentially work for iPod touch, but no way they'll let it survive on iPhone.

Yes, but those work by callback. So you pay for a SkypeOut call to yourself as well as the person you are calling (if you are calling a landline).

EQO is different technology as it is an actual app that runs on the phone. I imagine that even if they were to get a version working on the iPhone they'd probably never release it to the public.
