Hello all,

I am planning to get an iPod and wanted some advice. I'm looking at the 30GB iPod ($189) and the regular iPod Classic ($249). With the Canadian $ almost equal to the US$, I will just ask my friend to get it for me

However, I can't decide on a few things. My requirement is that the iPod should work on my Linux box (Amarok or rhythmbox). I don't use iTunes(*) and do not intend to buy music via iTunes at least in the coming year. As far as I have searched, I think the iPod 30GB works well with Linux for synchronizing music (not to crazy for video on the tiny screen though). But there have been conflicting reports about the iPod Classic being different and not being able to connect with Amarok or Rhythmbox, etc.

What are your suggestions? The $60 difference isn't that big as it comes with an extra 50GB of space. I could use it if I have it, but won't regret the lack of it either.

* - my MBP runs Linux most of the time

The iPod classic's code that prevented syncing with Linux has been broken, but if you want to not have to wait for that code to be spread around just get the 5G iPod.

Isn't that code already widely available .... though a bit intimidating to use for noobs.

Another questions: will the new iPod Classic need to be registered via iTunes for the user to be able to use it .... just like the iPod Touch needs to be?

No, it shouldn't as far as I know. It should just connect and be fine.
