It's a 60gb (12gb free) 5G (ordered at launch) and the HD is spinning up and down far too much for my liking, this seems to occasionally cause a long seek time (2-4 seconds) when trying to play a track or bring up a list of songs, etc.

I'm guessing the HD is on the way out? Could I replace it with another drive? Has anyone experienced this as a freak oddity and then its gone away? (I'll do a full restore later this evening to see if that helps.)

Try the restore first for sure. What bitrate is the music on your iPod? All of my music is 320kbps and because of that the solid state memory buffer becomes filled very quickly and requires the HDD to spin up more often than normal.

All 128 -> 192, some slightly more. The HD never used to spin up/strain though and I haven't changed much in my use of it over the years.

On a side note, could I put a 160gb Classic HD in my Video 5G if I go for the fix?

I suppose you could do it yourself yes but I highly doubt that Apple would fulfill the request to install a 160GB HDD.

Although I could be wrong.

Any fix would be a DIY job, I like tinkering...

I can't seem to find the interface specs, etc, I guess they're the same and I'll take a slight knock on battery life?!

Nope.. I'm based in the UK, I could buy a broken classic for £100 though and swap the drives, hmmm, we shall see.
