As I don't "yet" have an iPhone but have talked it up to all my friends and clients, I took the time to try one out today and was extreamly disappointed on the functionality of one application: Safari - The one application that I expected to be the happiest with next to mail.

Steve Said "The Real Internet".-

I do security systems and planned to have several clients use iPhones rather than laptops to view and control the security cameras. NOT!

Safari and Netscape support server push and therefore do not need java for streamed video.

On the iPhone, going to the "name of domain":8000 takes me to the web server like it is supposed to do but then continues "loading" until I get "server quit" or "server timed out"

Any ideas? - I do not think that port 8000 is blocked on the ATT store network but will check tomorrow just to be sure.

With Safari on a Mac Mini with a good connection this method yields great video and even on dialup it works well enough for you to get a full screen still photo about every 40 seconds.

This was on Edge, not Wi-Fi though I do not think it would make a difference.

It should be pretty trivial to write an applet that takes the video stream, pushes out a still every second, and then puts that in an automatically refreshing html page, right? I know it's definitely possible in java (assuming you're using java to get the video already, I'm just guessing), but javascript or python would work as well. It should take any decent web developer a week or so at most to cobble together.

Not me.
Using Safari (on a Mac, not iPhone) it all works. the problem is that the iPhone version of Safari (Real Internet?) won't display the thing. just says "loading"
If you have an iPhone try the demo this URL at Ben Software. Use "guest" for the name and password

1 The Home Page so you know where you are - scroll down to "demo" = http://www.bensoftware.com/ss/

2 Streight to the demo- http://benbird.homeip.net:8000/

Try it first on a Mac (or windows with java then the iPhone

Thanks

I just tried it on my iPhone over WiFi as well, and it worked (only in Server-push stream mode). My EDGE connection was too slow for it to work, however.

mutelight and Turnedgee762.
Thanks for the info. Just what I needed to know. The ATT store didn't have WiFi and I guess their Edge Network is not good enough in some locations. Funny thing though, Edge is suposed to be 2 to 3 times faster than dialup. Sure could use G3 or WiMax on the iPhone. Just have to wait a couple of years I guess.

Again, Thanks

EDGE is specced at 2-3x faster than dialup, but in the real world its not. There are many factors that will slow down EDGE, and only under perfect conditions will you get perfect speeds.

In short, EDGE is really only good for email, stocks, weather, maps, and if you're really in need you can browse the web on EDGE. Video/audio streaming is just painful or just plain wont work.

But a 3G iPhone will solve that for you. Waiting is the hard part.

I am not a programmer but I know streaming video is possible. Elgato is doing it with the eyetv software to automatically stream the shows you have on your computer. It might be something worthwhile to look at.

EDGE is actually fine for limited web browsing (although signal strength and other issues can cause it to be very slow sometimes). But for anything that requires downloading a lot of data, it's painful.
