Hi, 80gb classic iPod, iTunes, not using anything else. iTunes shows 18,000 songs, iPod only 16,000. Checked all the obvious settings. The songs that don't show on the iPod are songs I transferred from mp3 to aac. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

Ummm...you are pushing the limit with 18,000 songs (20,000 is max for 80gb), what bitrate you are using that may be why you are not getting all of them on there?

using aac 128. last week I had over 18,000 songs on the iPod, then iTunes crashed once (gave me a 'iTunes library (damaged)'). added music library as folder and at least all my songs with modifications appeared back in the library. had some tidying up to do with duplicates etc.

exactly. shouldn't be a problem no matter how many songs. why is it taking most, but not all. at the moment there are 2000 songs not going over and heaps of space left on the iPod .... BUT WHY???

OK. In the end I even talked to Apple (Apple Store Regent Street provides free technical support for all Apple products!!!) and they assumed that it's got to do something with an update they released. It wasn't that either. I reinstalled Vista and presto: problem sorted. OK, it took me hours and hours, but at least my machine is clean and lean and iTunes works. Backing up now every other day ...

It's funny how most people, including me, don't backup regularly until they lose data or almost lose it. (Time Machine here we come...)
