what does the '!' next to a song mean and how do I get rid of it. the song plays in itunes, but not on iPod. does anybody know? thank you.

It means the song cannot be found.

when you click on the song it should offer to locate it.

This happens when you "clean up" your library, rename a file, and otherwise do stuff that you don't tell iTunes about. Once you (you have to do it) locate the song for iTunes, it's all better.

On Windows, maybe.
On the Mac, you can rename or move song files all you want - as long as you don't delete them off the drive (i.e. move them to a different drive).
I have a most of my music on a network drive, and get the exclamation point when I forget to mount the drive before switching to iTunes.

Yes, that's what happens with Windows. The connection to iTunes in Windows is linked to the very simplistic "name/location" data that IS the filename. I haven't had reason to play with song names or locations on my Macs... Which may be why I sort of assumed that this was with Windows, and that's what was going on. My bad.
