rumors are floating around that apple is going to use intel processors in the next generation iphones, i guess making any 3rd party software and apps out now for iphones incompatable.

They sure are useless on the new firmware, until someone jailbreaks it again.

What's the point of this thread? Its not Apple's concern whether or not a progressive step in processor architecture would break unauthorized apps. When will people get this through their heads? If they switch to Intel, and it in turn breaks 3rd party apps, then its nobody's problem but those who choose to break their User License. And those who choose to hack their iPhones should know that any update from Apple could (and most likely will) break those apps at the least.

Besides, the rumor mill says that Apple is working on a true 3rd party application authorization system. When this happens (and it most likely will), you can be sure that Apple will support the authorized apps with every update.

A quick recompile should make most 3rd party apps work again even if Apple switched underlying architectures. The phone would still be running OS X mobile.

I have heard that intel will be using their chips in the next gen iphones wich will cause alot of compatiability issues with third party software.

I didn't know until now that the iPhone isn't based on an Intel platform. I'm surprised the underground third party developers got so far with it since that is the case. I guess it's a testament to the portability of OS X.

Pretty cool. At least Apple is still loyal to one of its classic processor families.

Intels mobile phone processors aren't due until 2009, so we've got a few revisions to go. Never the less, it would break all 3rd party apps.

Everyone is saying a switch from ARM would break third party apps (not that it matters currently given the new firmware), but I don't really understand why. Were the third parties actually compiling their apps for the ARM architecture?

As long as they don't come out with a software update that turns my ARM into an Intel...

3rd party apps will be broken 15 times before then. Then fixed. Then broken again. Then fixed. Who cares about an arch change, when they need to be recompiled for the software updates anyway?

Yes. What else would you compile an application into besides the architecture you want it to run on? Third party apps aren't Java, and we're not talking about the HTML ones.
