When you are using the data plan on your iPhone, does it take up minutes also? If so, the 450 minute plan seems entirely inadequate.

AT&T's data is unlimited. Are you talking about a different carrier?

no about AT&T in the United States.

My contract with Verizon is almost up and I am considering getting an iPhone but I don't want to get stuck with a big bill in order to use all the functionality of the phone.

The unlimited data aspect is one of the big selling points of the plan. It's a pretty well known feature.

nope, unlimited data is just that. if it also used minutes somehow it wouldn't be unlimited.
I have the 450 plan and my bills have all been accurate.

How is the data? I have only really heard complaints about the limited availability and the slow speeds with AT&T

Any insight?

It's relatively slow, but it's useful. Emails work well, surfing the web can be painful at times but not terrible. It's certainly not any sort of 'broadband' connection.

How does it compare to the Verizon Data plan? I have a friend with a Palm Verizon phone with full internet capability and it is painfully slow. This however was in a smaller metro area where data coverage may not have been great.

Depends on the network. As you said, your friend was in a smaller metro area. In an area where Verizon has EV-DO coverage, Verizon's data network will kick the pants of AT&T's EDGE network. Outside of EV-DO coverage they're probably about the same.

Does the data work anywhere that there is cellular service or is it only in designated metro areas? Is the data only available where there is 3g service?

The iPhone will have data access as long as you're on the AT&T EDGE network, which encompasses virtually the entire service area. 3G is not required; and in fact, you can't even make use of 3G on the iPhone.

1xRTT is to EV-DO as EDGE is to UMTS/HSDPA/3G (CDMA carriers are 1x/EV versus GSM/WCDMA which are EDGE/HSDPA). 1xRTT, which is what your friend was probably using, is slightly slower than EDGE, but they are both 2G/2.5G technology, each being much slower than their modern counterparts.

thanks for that info, the data plan sounds reasonable. I will probably be using wi-fi internet most of the time anyway.

Has anyone used an iPhone with LEAP wi-fi authentication? Mac OSX has LEAP so I am assuming an iPhone will have it also.
