I'm an 11-year PalmOS PDA veteran, currently using and abusing a Palm T|X. I've been looking at the iPod Touch (and to a certain extent iPhone) as my possible next device once my T|X finally dies on me, but I wouldn't want to give up the ability to use a stylus for certain apps (drawing, text entry once someone ports Graffiti or Jot). I know the screen technology makes a standard stylus unusable, but I've seen references to the iGiki TapRight. Is this a real product, vaporware or some kind of hoax? If it's real, has anyone used it? Thanks. {ProfJonathan}

IT's sold out, so there's got to be someone out there using it. I don't see why though other than for drawing. The keyboard really works well so I don't see a need for Graffiti or Jot.

Well, yes, but there are potential applications where fingers are just not as efficient as styli, such as drawing fine lines and (I can only hope) character recognition. That's why I'm interested in the iGiki. By the way, the company e-mailed me back and said I'm on its list now for whenever the product comes back in stock. {Jonathan}

That looks like a ripoff, if it DOES exist. Have you tried using a regular old Palm stylus with the iPhone for precision tapping and drawing?

Won't work--the way the touchscreen works on the iPhone, you need something that conducts electricity across an arc. Skin will; regular plastic and metal styli won't. From David Pogue's iPhone FAQ:
“Will the iPhone touch surface work if you’re wearing gloves? Be unpleasant to use the phone in the dead of winter otherwise.” –No, it responds ONLY to skin touch. I couldn’t use my fingernail, for example. And you certainly can’t use a stylus. (On the other hand, I doubt there’s ANY smartphone you can operate with gloves on.)"
So in order to use a stylus, one needs a special one, hence the iGiki product.

I think Pogue is a bit off there. I can use my fingernail (of course, its not a long fingernail or anything), and I can also use my finger through a thin cloth (such as a thin glove). After a certain thickness it will stop working though.
So while its possible to use the iPhone without touching it with skin, I'm pretty sure plastic won't work.
I think Pogue is getting old. I've seen some stuff of his lately that I wonder what he's been smokin.
