Do the risks of unlocking really outweigh the difference in your contract?

Well, it depends on a case but I have been dealing with AT&T unwillingness to improve signal in my work location since day one. AT&T blamed it on the iPhone so I setup Apple iPhone replacement and it did not improve anything.
I got AT&T manager's permission to be released from 2 year's contract. If they do not improve the signal in 2 weeks on the closest tower we have already identified I am moving to T-Mobile without any regret.
Visual Voice Mail is not worth the aggravation of missed calls every day. I am requesting official unlock.

I was talking about the OP's post. He wants to stick with ATT but use a different contract than the iPhone specific ones. I was asking if unlocking was really worth it in his case.

AT&T won't unlock it for you, if that's what you mean by 'requesting official unlock.' No way.
