Hi,

I had an AppleTV that I hacked using a patchstick.

I have accidentally upgraded it to v1.1 within the AppleTV and therefore did not use the 'Safe Method' posted on several websites. I have done a factory restore which has brought the software version back to the original 1.0 and re-hacked using patchstick.

However, I no longer have all the plugins available in AwkwardTV.

The ATV Files plugin 'appears' to have worked but when I use it, it is defaulting to the 'Downloads' folder and no files are showing even though I have a movie file in it on my imac. Plugins like NitoTv are not there.

Have I damaged the AppleTV in anyway?

All I want to be able to do is to play movie files with AC-3 passthough...no point if I cannot use my sound system to it's full. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...THANK YOU!

Kind regards, Phil.

Do the complete Factory Restore in the Apple TV. This will restore you to v1.0 of the software, erase all previously installed hacks and ERASE ALL PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED media (so backup what ever you moved over that is not already in iTunes).

Reinstall the Patchstick. Install ATVFiles and NitoTV.

Use NitoTV to do the safe upgrade to v1.1 of the software and install Perian.

You should be good to go from there to play AC3...

It took me 3 days for iTunes to move my 150Gigs back over...

Hi there Michael, thanks for the reply...

I've done what you have said and the following have installed the following after a factory reset back to 1.0:

nittoTV + some of the extras
Safe Upgrade to 1.1
Smart Installer
Saphire

In fact everything I install works fine except:

1. YouTube only plays Audio...no video shown on clips, just the YouTube logo!
2. I Cannot use NittoTV to install Perian, it says I do not have the correct permissions, however, I have done the correct command in SSH and all other plugins (which need permissions) have installed fine.
3. I am struggling to locate any videos/tv shows on my imac. Can someone clarify exactly what folder I need to put them in on my imac to enable me to stream them to the AppleTV. (I understand that DIVX/XVID videos cannot be added directly to itunes.) I cannot see any videos in Saphire or nitoTV.

I am completely confused?!! I can run a Windows based network with four servers and 50 clients but being a complete noob in OSX is tough.

Kind regards,

Phil.

Yeah, I am a bit of a Noob when it comes to all this AppleTV hacking, too, but I saw that no one had replied to you. To be honest, I purchased a USB PatchStick on eBay that did all the hacking for me and it came with 30 days of Technical Support for $69.00 (Since I am past the stage in my life where I want to invest hours of my time for a one-time hack). Unfortunately he seems to have retired, although if you still can't work things out and are willing to pay him a consultation fee, I would email him for you (but he did not respond to my last email to him). I will look for the instructions he sent me, which had some tech support in them.

In my situation, since I had already upgraded to 1.1 before installing the Patch, it screwed up my Apple TV; so I followed the rules that I sent to you previously and it worked fine. Note that I did NOT install Smart Installer (what is that?) or Sapphire (which I installed later). NitoTV automatically installed Perian, and it looks like you did NOT install ATVFiles, which is very important to the operation of ATV with hacked files, such as your AC3 files (I assume that they are AVIs or MKVs).

Also, I forgot to mention that you need to turn on SSH and the other file sharing mechanism (AFP?), when it offers you the ability to do so. In my case, my ATV has a fixed IP and I just mount its FRONTROW partition on my iMac's desktop and then move my DiVx, XviD, MKV files, etc. over to its Movie Folder in which I created new subfolders for Movies and TV Shows. Once you do this a new FILES menu should appear in the ATV Menu and when selected it will offer you MOVIES or TV SHOWS, and there will be the file you moved over manually.

In fact everything I install works fine except:

1. YouTube only plays Audio...no video shown on clips, just the YouTube logo!

No experience with this problem.
2. I Cannot use NittoTV to install Perian, it says I do not have the correct permissions, however, I have done the correct command in SSH and all other plugins (which need permissions) have installed fine.

My Perian installed automatically.

Again, install ATVFiles and manually move these files over to the FRONTROW:MOVIES subfolders you create over your network, and look to play them in the FILES menu.

I am completely confused?!! I can run a Windows based network with four servers and 50 clients but being a complete noob in OSX is tough.

Kind regards,

Phil.
I suggest you go back to a complete Factory Restore to 1.0 unhacked and just install ATVFiles and NitoTV, do the safe update to 1.1 and turn on the two file sharing mechanisms and go from there. Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the advice Michael. I appreciate it!

The thing is that I have activated ssh and afp. I can use terminal and ssh in to the appletv and I can also see the appletv on the left hand side of my finder window on my imac and use the 'connect' button to log in and transfer files.

However, I still cannot install Perian using nitoTV. I've even tried to use the manual method of installing Perian detailed here:

Clarified - Add Divx and Xvid Codecs to AppleTV Clarified

but I get an error when I do the following step:

'Step Seven
Copy this file to your AppleTv via AFP. To connect to your AppleTV via AFP just open a new Finder, select Go:Go To Folder from the menu and then enter afp://appletvipaddress using your appletv's ip address. When asked select frontrow as the volume to mount.'

I always get an error using afp://192.168.0.4 but I can ssh in using the same ip address in terminal.

Also in 'Step Ten' is asks me to do the following:

'Step Ten
Execute the following commands:
sudo mount -uw /
sudo mv -r Perian.component /System/Library/Quicktime/Perian.component'

But I get and error saying that the -r parameter is not valid.

It seems no matter what method I try to get everything working I hit a stumbling block, not helped by me being a noob :-(

I have installed ATV files but cannot see any movies. Just to clarify, do the movies have to be on the apple TV itself or can I use ATV files to browse to my imac for a shared folder with videos in it and stream?

Hey, if there's anyone I can talk this through with or anyone who lives local to Cheterfield,UK to get this finally resolved, then I'll fork out for the petrol cost and chuck in a voucher for the itunes store because I have just forked out for an imac mainly to get all my music and movies consolidated but just can't quite get to the finish.

Thanks for your help,

Regards, Phil.

I can't help here as somehow my installation automatically included Perian...

I manually move my AVI/DivX/XviD files over to the appropriate subfolder that I create in FRONTROW:MOVIES. I have not tried streaming these files.

Thanks for your help,

Regards, Phil.
Thanksgiving for me today; I have to build a turkey fryer and then fry a turkey for the familywide dinner tonight. I will be back tomorrow. Don't worry, if it can be done, it will be done! If you want to give me an email address, I will zip the contents of the PatchStick I purchased on eBay with the instructions and send them to you to try... Good luck!

as far as the perian permissions go, here's how to fix it:

NitoTV - AwkwardTV - Fixing Helper Permissions :
ssh -1 frontrow@AppleTV.local
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/nitoTV.frappliance/Contents/Resources/fixPerm
however, when i installed perian, it asked if i wanted to let it take over h.264. good; because i thought perian would also run h.264... NOW, anything done outside of nitotv just wont play! youtube is audio only, trailers are dead also. sigh.

just to mention it: i did a clean wipe and then went ahead and did the full beginners guide from: Beginner's Guide - AwkwardTV

any ideas?

thanks.
