So these are a couple things that i'm assuming right now that i don't know are true or not:
-If i were to go purchase an Iphone right now it would come with FW v1.1.2
-The FW v1.1.2 iphone cannot be unlocked even if it is downgraded to FW v1.1.2

So can anyone tell me if this is true or not? I wanted to go buy a new iphone and downgrade it to fw v 1.1.1 so i can unlock it. Is this possible?

Yes, an iPhone purchased at this time would have 1.1.2 on it.

I don't know about unlocking on 1.1.2 though.

1.1.2 'out of the box' cannot be unlocked. It sounds like this might be an ongoing problem and that Apple has closed all the holes. There is some talk of a funny SIM 'add-on' unit called Turbosim working on 1.1.2 OTB. This tricks the system into believing that your non-'approved' SIM is an approved one. Or something. Take a look at the Hackint0sh forums for more details.

You can do that, but what you can't do is to alter the 'baseband' which is the bit needed to unlock the phone.

Is there a way to tell if the phone already has 1.1.2 on it without it being turned on? like if i were to go buy it from someone online is there something on the box or serial number that will let me know i'm not buying an iphone with the new 1.1.2 on it.

Only buy from well-respected sellers and do your homework before making a commitment - i.e. ask specifically what the current firmware version is and what the history of the device is.

iNdepandance program will tell you what kind of firmware is on your phone. AFAIK, the program can jailbreak your phone by reverting the phone to an earlier firmware version then reverting it to 1.1.2

The firmware isn't the problem it is the baseband firmware. You have to get an iPhone that was manufactured before week 45. You can find the creation date in the serial number before you buy it.

My friend got one yesterday from the Applestore and it was week 51. He can use it as an iPod touch but not unlock the carrier... yet. Unless he gets a $100 turbo sim that is.

You can find all sorts of info here: Unlock the iPhone - the simple tutorial!
