Since maybe last year I regularly listen to the MacBreak Weekly podcast and this is really one of my fav moment of the week! Out of curiosity I went to their archive to listen to their iDay show again. Leo Laporte said something really interesting when he believed that iPhone's SDK might actually be based on the Yahoo widget platform. It could, indeed, solve security concerns and at the same time bring in thousand of "apps".

I dont care much for the Stocks thing but the Weather is pretty cool.

What do you think? Is this possible?

Apple has their own Dashboard platform. Why would they use the Yahoo widget platform?

I agree. Their dashboard platform is supposed to be very easy to develop for, and since Dashboard Widgets can be very compact, yet feature rich, I can't imagine why Apple wouldn't use this as a starting point.

The SDK that Apple is coming out with in February will be based on Cocoa, but I could see them also shipping a dashboard based SDK in addition, much like the current web SDK but with the ability to store pages locally.

How do you know if this is going to be based on Cocoa ?

Do you have additional insider informations about the iPhone SDK coming in February ?

So far, it's been suggested that it would be similar to the Google OpenSocial API which is mainly Javascript based.

I wish they'd give us access to stuff like Core animation and the whole Cocoa library but I doubt it as it would make it easier to jailbreak the phone or implement VOIP which Apple is ready to do anything to prevent from happening.

But I may be wrong.

So I hope.

Using the Y! Widgets architecture would be just about the least imaginable scenario I could imagine. Someone must be smoking crack.

I agree,

I guess, this would have been ok at launch (instead of this "you can write web sites for my device" ... thank you Steve, so nice of you), but waiting so long to get another widget world, please no.

Nothing will ever replace a core program, nicely written and hosted on this nice big hard drive.

Anyway, does anyone know more about this SDK that he or she could share in this thread ?

Shall I start a new thread for that ? I am new to MACNN forums, so I don't know if I should do it.

I don't think too much more is known at this point, miniphone. But you can try starting a thread to discuss it.

Ok, I'll try my luck.

Maybe someone will give us more details.
