Windows machine?

Try hooking it up to a Mac to restore it, and then hooking it back up to your Windows box.

If that doesn't work, it's dying.

The fact that it refused to transfer more than a couple of songs means it's very likely that your iPod's hard disk is failing - a likely result of whatever happened that broke its screen.

This should not be a problem if the update reset your iPod to factory settings because you have the playlists you created in iTunes and the songs are all there (provided you didn't simply erase the songs in iTunes and you assumed the iPod would last forever). You just need to establish the synch again and all the songs are put back. Of course that depends on the above assertion that you did not erase the iTunes library.
If you did, then you need to re-rip all the songs.
