I got an 8gb Nano this christmas and when I plugged it into my Mac OS X 10.3.9, it said I needed 10.4.8 to run it. I was wondering if there was a way into tricking my Mac to letting it use my iPod.
Thanks in advance

No. There are apparently extensions in Tiger that are crucial to allowing newer iPods (not just the new Nanos, but iPod Touch and iPhones as well). You can find Tiger for a very affordable price if you look for it, and upgrading from 10.3.X makes even older machines run a lot faster. I pubgraded my wife's 800MHz G4 iBook to Tiger and it was suddenly noticeably faster.

I had exactly the same problem. Very frustrating. The store pointed out OS X 10.3.9 as the minimum required for the nano and the box delivered says 10.4.8! So I am considering return the product to the store.
Upgrading the system requires more time, money and disk space. For me a new hard disk would be necessary. And I guess there isn't a technical difficulty in allowing the nano to work with 10.3.9, even if without some new features. Some extra effort was made only to block it completely.

Make room for me in this boat. Same story, Christmas gift nano wont work with my operating system. My computer is 3 years old (imac with IBM motor) 10.3.9 operating system. Went down to the local apple store and they tell me I need Tiger which they no longer sell (not recommended to put leopard on my comp). So they tell me to find it on ebay or craigslist! Wow, an Apple employee telling me to find one of their products used on the internet, does this seem strange for an apple product? Im still not sure what Im going to do, this was a gift but I am so pissed at apple right now!!!!!!!

X.4 was released in 2005
Good luck finding any company's product they discontinued at their retail store. Its not strange at all. They no longer make the software why would they have it around to sell?
There's plenty of sources to buy it from. If you want to use that iPod you only have one thing you can do... buy it.
