What sorts of solutions have you tried? You mentioned you've tried things that aren't helping.
What'd you do to it when you opened it up?

I am pretty sure you can restore in iTunes, it even if it's locked.

I miss the days of the G5 and XPS Pentium 4 running side by side as high-end machines.

What do you mean "locked"? What "locked" sign?
The little padlock?
Try moving the hold switch back and forth a couple of times.
Else, you might have to open'er up again and fix whatever you borked.

You put the plastic tabs over the lock switch in the wrong position.
They are not coming into contact with the actual switch on the iPod's circuit board. With Nano's this was a really easy mistake to make since the tabs were smaller.
Take the case back off and make sure you line them up properly when you seal the iPod back up.

This is a good example of why it's very important to make sure something works before you go to the trouble of putting it back together. I think Langdon has hit the nail on the head. The Hold switch is very simple-but the slider isn't necessarily easy to manipulate (it's all pretty darn small in there, isn't it?). Take the back off and move the slider; it sounds like it's just backwards. And make sure the thing is NOT on Hold before you finish putting it back together.
Good luck!

That's what he means by locked! He means "on hold" or whatever other words would apply. The lock symbol is showing on the display.
I just changed the battery in my iPod 3G for the second time (each lasts about two years). I just barely noticed the tiny switch on the inside for the HOLD switch. Everything went together perfectly and I have 8 hours of battery life once again (oh, the joys of owning a 2003-era iPod).
Don't be embarrassed to report back. It can happen to anyone.
