Just come across this and it's most annoying.

New ipods require 10.4.10 or later. Great if you have a new Mac running Leopard or one that will upgrade to and run 10.5 happily.

But what about the thousands of older Mac owners who can't run Leopard well on their Macs? Well they'll have to upgrade to 10.4. Except that Apple have withdrawn 10.4 from sale everywhere and it is currently unobtainable.

I know three people who are currently stuck with new ipods bought at Christmas that they cannot use without either buying a new Mac or hunting down a copy of tiger on ebay at an excessive price. And a lot of people wouldn't trust ebay foe software purchase.

A bit thoughtless of Apple that.

Try here
MegaMacs.com - Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger Operating System Bundle DVDs

Not much else out there from what I have seen. Good luck hunting.

You act as if there are no other sources for Tiger.

eBay. This forum (the marketplace). Etc.

While it is unfortunate that Apple tends to have poor support for old products with new ones, you have more options than just retail stores for Tiger. Utilize them.

Why should Mac users have to purchase one product in order to use another? The new iPods have absolutely no problems running in Windows XP (which is about as old as 10.1), I can't imagine why Apple would require Mac users to upgrade to 10.4.10, except to force more MacOS sales.

Actually I'm not the one with the problem as I'm happily running 10.5 on my MacBook. It was several people I know who ran into the problem, all of whom use either old G3 iMacs or eMacs, both of which are not really viable Leopard machines.

My concern was the speed with which Aplle withdrew Tiger from sale given the huge number of older machines that Leopard is not a viable OS for who now cannot jump to Tiger.

Ye it IS available on ebay (at a huge price premium atm), but I think the system demands for the new ipods are probably more excessive than they need be and certainly will catch a large number of Apple users by surprise who will be expecting to just use them. Not everyone reads the tech specs small print.

It's Apple that has the high demands, not the iPods themselves. My 1ghz Pentium PC (dusted it off for this thread) has absolutely no problems with my iPod Touch.

Apple doesn't sale Tiger anymore. It's not beneficial to them. I don't see why Panther couldn't work with a new iPod, but apparently Apple has a reason. Honestly though, I would much rather have a modern operating system before a modern iPod. It's like when you see a dumpy house but it has an amazing $50k kitchen.
