Disclaimer: I'm sure that there is another thread on this topic some place else, but I don't see it right now.

The January iPod touch upgrade is so amazing in terms of added functionality that I can barely contain my giddiness over it. The honest truth is that the touch is now only lacking the cell phone components and is otherwise essentially an iPhone after this update. Mail is amazing by itself and worth four times the cost of the upgrade alone.

One downside is that the updater is buggy and failed three or four times on my iPod before completing successfully. It told me I was going to have to do a Restore to get things to work and I chose to do that, but for some magical reason it finally succeeded in updating without the restore. The error message I got said that my "iPhone" experienced an error. That was a bit freaky; I thought I was going to have to take the touch in for service because it refused to upgrade properly even after I tried restoring a number of times. Thankfully it worked out finally. As I said in another thread, this upgrade makes me want to go out and by touches for all of my friends and family. The touch was an amazing iPod before; now it's so amazing that I cannot even believe Apple released such an upgrade. I give the upgrade 4 and a half stars out of 5 - it would have gotten 5 if the upgrade process had not been buggy.

The added apps are nice BUT when I am able to store documents or save web pages without loosing them when I shut it off, I'll get excited.

We were too busy trying to jailbreak 1.1.3.

I love the new apps, the google wifi location things works much better than my blackberry (using edge).

Also try clicking on an address, very smart.

Mail app has some problems after Jailbreak by there is a patch now.

V happy!

Doesn't safari allow you to see your bookmarks, assuming you have .Mac that is?

I don't get it...why is there a need to jailbreak the touch?

So we can install third party software on it.

I'm happy with the January Software Update as well. The update process went fine for me. However, an external speaker on the iPod touch would be a nice feature to have.

Seriously, I believe that iPod touch owners will jump into the iPhone bandwagon.

I enjoy the 1.1.3 jailbreak and all of Januarys apps for free.

Afterall being an early adopter deserves some perks.

Oh wait, no it doesn't. What the hell was I thinking?

Thats a good point, its an obvious upgrade path, especially for people who don't have the iPhone locally yet, get them into multi touch first and when the phone comes out its easier for them to upgrade.

I guess i'll post this here rather than start a new thread (though I hope i'm not hijacking).

I'm thinking I will get a touch very soon (maybe next weekish) and willg et the 16GB as I want the largest available, even though 16GB is awful small. What are the chances that a larger ipod touch comes out within the next few months???

Agreed. Even the PSP could download and store files from the Internet, and web browsing was barely peripheral functionality on that platform.

I doubt that there will be a larger size before summer.

I learnt about it from Joy Of Tech of all places. Weird.

How did I miss it?

Oh well, time to start saving up for it. This is finally what will replace my trusty old 20GB 2nd Gen iPod.
