All of a sudden I am unable to eject my iPod from iTunes. I keep receiving the following error message: "The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application."
Has anybody encountered this before? Any suggestions as to how I should troubleshoot it? I have no idea what application could be involved.

No, I think it preempts a normal restart. You've got to do a forced unmount or just pull the plug on the iPod (obviously forced unmount is preferable). I think it's my brother's third party 5G game Phase that's doing it.
