Question:

How can I redirect *some* of my iTunes content to an external drive? (Such as my podcasts or such as a particular TV show).

I want to free up some space, but I don't want to delete the content forever.

Or ... conversely: How can I export certain items out of iTunes (such as the aforementioned TV show) for later viewing without deleting it?

Does this make sense to anyone?

From what I have read, you will have to move the "entire" library. I am getting ready to do this myself. Unless someone else can chime in with a solution, I will move the entire library. Would be nice to do what your asking though.

It's a laptop that I won't always have the external drive connected to. (And worse, the same box syncs my iPhone, so I don't want to "unsync" my music when the external drive is disconnected.)

So ideally I'd have *some* music on the laptop and some other stuff (Like the TV show) on the external drive.

You just have to set the prefs to "don't copy into library."

That works BEFORE you add the files. But once they are in ... they are stuck. You can't move them without deleting them and re-adding them, thus messing up your ratings, etc.

After dorking around with some scripts that didn't entirely work (Move Files to Folder, etc.) I ran across this:

MoveTunes 1.5 software download - Mac OS X - VersionTracker

It looks promising. It's $6 shareware. If it works it will be worth it.

I'm going to try this afternoon. (Have some errands to run now.)

Can't you just move the actual files (in your Music folder) to the external drive and then, when iTunes asks, relink them from within iTunes?

That might be an idea. Let me try it....
ok. That does indeed work, but it's a horrifically show process if you have anything more than a handful of files.

Doug's iTunes Library Manager will let you create several libraries within one account.

I'll look at that script. (Library Manager)

FWIW I just typed MoveTunes. It works brilliantly. The interface is a bit quirky, but it does what it says. Amazing product. If it passes a few other little tests here then I'll be sending in my $6. (It's un-restricted BTW)
