My completely standard, non-jail broken 8GB touch cannot properly receive software updates. Regular update attempts cause an unknown failure and a second message that "the iPhone" cannot be updated. After that, only a Restore works. This happened with the January update as well as with the new 1.1.4 update that I just attempted to apply. Otherwise my iPod is fine, but I'd love to be able to update without having to Restore every time. Except for this issue, my touch works properly. Are other touch owners experiencing this problem, or is my touch partially defective?

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Then try again.

I reset my ipods/friends ipods when stuff randomly stops working, it doesn't erase anything, don't worry.

Yup, did that. It goes into "Recovery Mode" and iTunes prompt to Restore. I'd just like to know if I'm the only one experiencing this.

Did you try the reset when not plugged into your mac? Try it, it might make a difference. And sorry I don't know the answer to whether others have experienced this problem.
