Is there a way to transfer songs/files from my ipod touch onto the mac. I read somewhere disk mode is not available for ipod touch. That true? Any workarounds?

Correct, disk mode is not available. There are some utilities available that work with the touch, such as this one, but I don't know if you can use such a utility to transfer files from a touch like you can on other iPods.

If it's music you've purchased from the iTMS, you can do it by selecting "Transfer Purchases from iPod" from the File menu.
