Hi, I have a two-prong question:

I recently got caught in the rain and my iphone was in my pocket, now the bottom 6mm of the screen is dead which is a big problem for text input (myspacebaris****edandicanthitthenumberbutton) the rest of the functionality is perfect. I jail-broke my phone but couldn’t work out how to use the whole SSH thing.

So the question is:

1 anybody have any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem.

2 is it possible to return a phone if I don't have a ATT number?

Nope once you jailbroke your iPhone you voided your warranty. Once you got your iPhone wet, you voided your warranty.

Correct. AT&T will tell you to take it to the Apple store, and Apple will tell you that you're SOL on it since you voided the warranty.

Look at the suggestions people have given me there and the info on my blog posting as well at Idle Thoughts: iPhone, Post Swimming Pool

While my phone isn't totally back, I can do everything if I'm patient.

is there any way to hide the fact that my iphone was jailbroke... i completely wiped it, but in order to prove the screen is broke i'll need to activate it or what? i was planing on saying i'm super paranoid about identity theft so i wiped the phone... he he. or can i borough my friend's at&t sim... will any at&t sim work?

and i looked in the earphone jack... it isn't red... so no evidence of water damage...

ok ok so if i can't convince them to give me a new one... anybody know how much it will be to get it repaired?

I think regardless if its been jail broken is the fact that they may still be able tell if the unit failed due to getting wet. While the jack has not turned red, that doesn't mean the water that did seep in had not left any evidence.

Besides, it failed because of your failure to keep it dry why should apple give you a new one because of your negligence? I understand it was an accident but still the fact remains getting the unit wet is not something that is covered by the warranty.

The screen is broken? Apple definitely won't cover that. They did at first when the iPhone was new, but after the novelty of the phone wore off, they toughened up their policies on what they will/will not accept as far as damages go. They'll more than likely charge you $249/$299 for the repair.

i see, i see.

it didn't really get wet, just a little damp, but i see where you are going... and the screen isn't totally broken just the bottom 5mm of the screen is unresponsive to touch... but works aside from that.

ok ok i'll get it repaired, and stop dreaming up ways to scam Stevie J...

thanks everyone!
