So if I get an Italian T-Mobile iPhone, think I can use it with T-Mobile in the US? I'm trying to think of a way to avoid AT&T.

No. The Italian iPhone will only work with the Italian T-mobile.

I'm surprised there are so many questions about carrier compatibility with the iPhone. Every iPhone only works (in the rate plan sense, not in the roaming snse) with one carrier in one country.

You could use that Italian iPhone with any SIM card if if you unlock it. Unlocking is easy with present iPhone. It will likely be possible on the iPhone 3G too, but we don't know details yet.

Are the T-Mobile and Orange unlocked iPhones "official" unlocked iPhones? I remember reading someplace that the iPhones that were unlocked by users were wonky.

My iPhone was "user-unlocked" and worked beautifully. I had 3 sim cards T-Mobile (US), TelCell (Sint Maarten), and bmobile (Trinidad) and never had any trouble. I was even able to use my providers EDGE network in Sint Maarten.

I'm so pissed that my phone was stolen. I don't know how I'm going to be able to get a new one.

In the beginning unlocking was sketchy, but in the meantime it has become something that is very easy to do and reliable. The worst thing that could happen is that you'd have to unlock it again after a firmware update. But as I already said, the unlocking procedure will likely change with the new iPhone and we will have to wait and see how it turns out.
