At the Allentown, PA store, I was told that the new 8-gig iPhone would be US 199.00. The "Genius" told me I could order on line on 7/11 (or was it I could buy it at the 7-11?) and even activate it over iTunes. However, I really want only the iPod Touch. Problem is, with 8-gigs, it's a hundred dollars more than the iPhone will be next month! Is Apple serious about selling any more iPods? Why would anyone buy one? Even if you didn't want the phone part, you'd still buy the iPhone for $100 less and just use that. I'm guessing either the price for the phone that the 'genius' gave me is bogus, or Apple is planning to stop selling the iPod touch, or will the price drop? Thoughts?

Yeah, the iPhone is cheaper than the iPod Touch.

That's like saying you could buy a house for only the cost of the closing fees.

iPhone = $199 + (at least) $70/month for 2 years = (at least) $1900
iPod Touch = $299

At the very least, you'll have to pay a month of the contract + an early termination fee of $175.

If you need a cellphone, the iPhone is a great deal. A crappy cellphone+plan and an iTouch would cost more that just an iPhone+plan.

Saying an iPhone costs $1900 is plainly wrong. An iPhone with 2 years of access costs $1900.

If you bought an iPhone, then activated and cancelled on the spot, it would be 199+175+75 = $449. A 8GB iTouch is now $319. For that $130, you have an inactive 3G phone and GPS, an a bunch of other little things.

I doubt it. Lots of people have crappy cell phones that they get for "free" with $50-ish/month plans.

Didn't I say exactly that in the post you quoted? :checks: Yup, I did. It's the cost of the phone + two years of payments, or it's the cancellation fee and probably a month of service, which makes it more expensive than an iPod Touch. And that's not even addressing the question of which, if any, functions will work on a cancelled-contract iPhone 3G.
