Ok, so I live in the sticks.

According to AT&T's coverage maps, there is no 3G coverage whatsoever in my state. None, zip, zilch, nada, not a sausage.....

Assuming of course that the iPhone 3G is backwards compatible on the EDGE network, what are the chances AT&T will offer the old $20 data + 200 sms plan with the new 3G iPhone?

Just a thought...

Yep, ain't gonna happen. AT&T and "fair" should never be used in the same sentence, paragraph or 400-page document.... take it from a long time AT&T customer...

I thought I came across some information or a web page stating that AT&T will be charging the 3G price regardless if you live in an area that is not served by 3G.

You did... it's going to happen.

It's one plan which is supposed to cover all ground in terms of cellular data (both EDGE and 3G). What they don't explain is whether or not the soft cap exists on their so-called "unlimited" plan.

Any thoughts?

If l lived in a place that didn't have 3G, I'd probably just get a v1 iPhone. The only real thing you'll lose is GPS but you'll also just have to pay the $20/month data plan which has 200 text messages.
