I plan on upgrading to the 3G model, but not this week (don't have time tomorrow or this weekend, traveling next week). But I do want to check out the 2.0 software and all the new apps.
Question: if I upgrade to v 2.0, will that affect the resale value of my current iPhone? I remember someone on another board a couple of weeks ago warning not to upgrade to v 2.0 if you had plans to sell the iPhone later. Bogus advice? Or is there some logic behind that argument?

I think the logic behind that is if you upgrade to 2.0 you wont be able to unlock it to run on other carriers (which is a big selling point). That is until they crack version 2.0 and allow that. But who knows when that will happen.
But there may be a way to downgrade to 1.1.x, although I'm not certain of that.

2.0 Has been cracked already. The tool should be available soon according to Gizmodo.

So aside from the 2.0 jailbreak question, there's no other effect v.2 will have on the resale value of my iPhone, correct?
Frankly, I'd like to install v.2 just to get the secure wiping ability before I sell it anyway.

Wow, already cracked?
And just to clarify, jailbreaking isn't the same as unlocking. Jailbreaking is just allowing apps to be installed on the iPhone (unofficial apps), but unlocking allows the phone to be used on other carriers.

iPhone OS 2.0 was jailbroken and unlocked before it hit stores in most places. No reason not to upgrade.
