9to5Mac is reporting that the latest iPhone software has been unlocked.

Here's the Gizmodo post on unlocked iPhone 2.0.

Nice - I'm in no mood for changing my iPhone 2G's cheap limitless data package into whatever crap Sonera tries to push in Finland. Their mothership, TeliaSonera in Sweden, already relented and came out with a decent deal for the lucky neighbors, though.

In any case, consumers here are accustomed to buying the phone and contract separately, from separate vendors and the Pwnage tool helps me do just that.

I doubt it - it's not like they didn't know what to expect...

Probably not - its money in the bank for them. Its the cell phone companies that apple deals with that are probably pissed on this. Either way apple sells an iphone.

Why would they be? Contract is contract.

Now that Apple doesn't get a monthly kickback from AT&T, they have less reason to care about unlocking.

The only downside to unlocking now is that it may upset the carriers who have subsidized the devices, but their service contracts can probably deal with that.

I wonder why Apple doesn't want to sell unlocked phones with 3G along with the carrier subsidized ones... is visual voicemail that big of a deal?

They used the beta's and had it unlocked before the phone release.

Um, "they" meant "Apple".

Apple is neither surprised, nor shocked, nor dismayed, nor losing sleep over the fact that somebody out there has managed to hack the 2.0 software.

Provided you need a contract to buy an iPhone.

Granted its makes too much sense financially to buy the subsidized iPhone but I'm sure some sales will be w/o a contract.
