how do I make my iPhone silient when it rings?

I tried turning on the vibrate feature (both of them ) but the phone just vibrates and rings at the same time.

Go to Settings>Sounds>Silent>Vibrate On. The options below that is where you can choose to have the vibrate mode on/off while ringing. Then make sure the switch on the top left side of the phone is turned to the down position.

many thanks. I wAs used to just being a software change like my old phone. I should read the manual also.
