When I saw the new IPhone APP 'Mocha VNC Lite' this morning on the App Store, I immediately thought to myself, "Will I have to buy an Airport Express Base Station to get my devices connected?" But I played around in my Network preferences and figured out a way to broadcast Airport connections and create a Wireless Local Area Network. Maybe you will benefit from this...let me know.
1. Open System Preferences -> Network -> Network Config displays.
2. Select the Plus(+) button to add a new Network connection.
3. Make sure the interface is set to 'Airport' and give it a customize service name.
4. Click 'Create'.
Now with your new Network selected in the network pane do the following:
1. Click 'Advance'near the bottom right hand side of the screen.
2. GoTo the 2nd tab(TCP/IP)
3. Configure IPV4 to :MANUALLY | Assign desired IP Address(I.E. 10.0.0.1) and 'OK'
Your Airport Interface is created. Next create a network name:
With your new Network Interface selected, drop down the combo box for 'Network Name'
1. Select 'Create Network' | For computer-to-computer network.
2. Assign it a name and password with auto channell(11)
3. Click 'OK'
Your done! Here is how to connect the devices:
1. Turn on your Macbook's Airport(Hopefully by now you know how to)
2. Turn on your Ipod Touch's Wi-Fi and select your new network and authenticate with password.
Once authenticated use either the new Iphone/Ipod Touch App 'Remote' to connect to ITunes, or use Mocha VNC Lite to control your desktop. To use VNC Lite, your machine must be configured to allow VNC connections.
Here are the steps to enable VNC:
1. System Preferences -> Sharing -> Enable 'Remote Management'
2. Click button 'Computer Settings' | Select Radio butons 2 & 3 -> assign password.
3. Click 'OK' | Done!
Note: You can allow access for all users or specify who you want to connect remotely.
I hope this saves you from going out and purchasing an Airport Express Base Station just to create a Personal Area Network for your Ipod Touch and Macbook
