Pictures - How to get them off my iPhone?

So, I set up a directory for syncing my iPhone pictures. However, all I get is a list of directories and a Photo Database in an "iPhone Photo Cache", but it has nothing in it.

How do I get pictures off my iPhone to my computer without emailing them to myself?

Image Capture, or iPhoto. Not sure how to on a PC though.

Hmmm... Image capture. I should have guessed. Makes sense.

I suppose some sort of hack to allow the iPhone to be seen as a hard drive would also work. Has anyone tried it with the 3G, and if so, are there any ill effects to using these hacks? I presume these are minor OS hacks for the Mac.
