hello there:
i've heard that previous incarnations of the iPod/iPhone could be ‘enabled as hard drives’ to store/archive documents/files.
(how) can this work with the iPhone 3G ?

It doesn't, currently.
Closest thing is an application called "FileMagnet", which is pretty cool, from all accounts.

FileMagnet ($5) will allow you to transfer and view files or entire folders on your iPhone. It works quite well actually. The only thing to keep in mind is that the file transfer works over WiFi and not through USB while syncing (because it uses Bonjour on your subnet).

What? The iPhone doens't support Disk Mode? Come on, even my 50$ iPod Shuffle does...

The iPhone also doesn't clip to your clothes like your $50 Shuffle.

When I unboxed mine and noticed that I wanted my money back too. Too bad I had already signed an 18 month subscription.
