Is iPhone VPN different from Leopard VPN?

Somehow I can't get my iPhone to connect to one of my university's VPN servers even though it works just fine with Leopard. The strange thing is that the iPhone actually connects to the VPN, but it can't really transfer any data. Safari gives an error "can't connect to the Internet" and Mail simply cannot pick up mail because it claims there is no connection. Meanwhile VPN says it's connected just fine.
I use regular PPTP VPN. I enter the server name, my user account name, and my password. I chose automatic encryption. The iPhone immediately connects with the server, but I can't use the connection. With Leopard I'm using the exact same settings and VPN works just fine.
So any ideas if the iPhone's VPN client is somehow different from Leopard's? Does anybody have an idea why I can open the VPN connection but not get any data over it?

I know my university has been having some trouble with the 2.0 software and keeping a dedicated connection to the VPN.
sorry I can't help anymore than this. I suggest sending an email to the network people and let them know there is an issue.

I will try to get ahold of one of the network guys when they get back from vacation.
It is really weird that something that works perfect on OS X doesn't work on iPhone OS X. It's even stranger that it appears to work (no warnings), but then actually doesn't really do anything.

Yes. The iPhone tells me which IP I am connected to and which IP I have received. The former is indeed the VPN server and the latter is one of the IPs this server actually hands out. So from that end everything appears to be fine.
Regardless, whatever app I try (Mail, Safari, etc.) they all claim there is no connection to the internet.

But the comment about DNS got me wondering.
I entered a few IPs into Safari and it displayed the pages immediately. So it appears to be a DNS issue. So where can I enter DNS server IPs when I'm connected through VPN? I can't find any setting to do that on the iPhone. Any ideas?

Are you connecting over Wi-Fi? If so, you can edit the DNS settings on the Wi-Fi configuration screen.

Good point! I'll have to try that. Some of the time I'd use VPN over 3G so I guess no dice there. But whenever I use VPN over WiFi that just might do the trick. Thanks
