I have two iTunes libraries on my MBP; one for when I'm at home, based on music stored on my network drive, and one for the rest of the time and basedon the MBP's hard drive. I have one iPod, a 2Gen 8GB Nano, synced with the smaller, MBP-based library. I want to add some songs from the other library without losing what's on it already.

Can I JUST add songs with "manage music manually" selected, or is there a catch somewhere that would keep me from doing that? Or would it be simpler just to add some of the actual tracks from my huge library to my small, portable library?

You can add songs from any library from any computer when the iPod is manually managed.

Just that playcount and ratings are not updated from an iPod that's on manual content management.

So it IS as simple as I thought? Great! And I'm not worried about playcounts or ratings here, just getting the music I want on that iPod. Thanks!

Why not keep ALL your music on the external, and then all the stuff you want to carry with you on the iPod? No need to keep music on the laptop hard drive at all!

I'm often in situations where the iPod isn't particularly convenient, or where I want to use Internet Radio instead of my own songs. And often I buy music when I'm out and about with the MBP, so I update my home library later, when I get home. When you keep your entire library on an external drive, then take your computer somewhere that it can't connect to that external drive, iTunes "isn't very friendly." It keeps trying to find your library, and in my experience it becomes a royal pain to try to do anything with it.

I've so far built that second library, and now I just have to wait with the MPB running iTunes for it to find all the album art and do the gapless stuff. It's boring, but at least I'm not in school at the moment.
